Who was St.Valentine?

Two legends about St. Valentine exist. Both come from old Rome.

Christian legend is from 3rd century of this era, from empire of Caesar Claudius II. Caesar Claudius II. held a lots of battles but roman men didn´t want to fight for him. Caesar thought that men didn´t want to fight for him because of their families and loves. He forbade any weddings. Valentine lives in this time also in Rome. He didn´t like Caesar´s decision about wedding and he continued with married of young love couples. Caesar got to know and let Valentine put into prison.

Pagan legend talks about Valentine who was very honest and intelligent man. About his wisdom and intelligence heard also a Caesar. He admired Valentine because of his intelligence and called him to come. Valentine was Christian so he couldn´t be a caesar´s friend. Caesar predicated that Valentine believed in superstitions. But Valentine replied that Caesar is that one who believed in superstitions. Caesar decided that is necessary to see about Valentine and prefect Astorius was delegated to do this. Prefect wanted to have a good control about Valentine and he invited him to his house. In prefect´s house Valentine met his blind daughter. Prefect asked Valentine to pray for his daughter and Valentine did. Valentine fell in love with prefect´s daughter. Miracle worked and blind girl got her sight back. All Rome was talking about this miracle. Pagans didn´t want to believe it. They came to prefect´s house, caught Valentine and they took him. Behind the town they beheaded him. Valentine had a difficult fate but he became a patron of staunch and pure love.
